Four years ago, on October 23, 2016, the Marianas Outrigger Club (MOC) made history by winning all three races in the men’s division of the 18th Micronesia Cup held in Koror, Palau. The team, comprising Jose Quan, Vince Tudela, Bobby Cruz, Rich Salas, Ketson “Jack” Kabiriel, Billy Grow, Angel San Nicolas, James Lee, and captain Dino Manning, won the 12-mile long course in 1:28:16, beating Hong Kong United and home team PCC Mesekiu 3. MOC also won the 500m and 1,500m races on the opening day, making them the first CNMI team to achieve a 3-peat. The club was named Team of the Year during the Northern Marianas Sports Association Annual Banquet. In the 19th Micro Cup, MOC almost duplicated its 2016 feat by winning the 500m and long distance race but missed the 1,000m title. The 2020 Micro Cup was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and in 2018, the CNMI-hosted Micro Cup was scrapped due to Super Typhoon Yutu.
