
The Marianas Outrigger Club Saipan won the 10-mile endurance race at the 19th annual Micronesia Cup, which saw paddlers representing 17 clubs and over 40 teams. The competition began with the 1,000-meter sprints on Friday, followed by the 500-meter sprints and “Neni” race exhibition on Saturday. Sunday saw the long endurance race from Hagåtña boat basin to Two Lovers’ Point and back, with men covering 10 miles, women 8 miles and mixed races 6 miles. Belau Kanu Club won the women’s 8-mile and mixed 6-mile endurance races, as well as the women’s and mixed 500-meter races, and the men’s 1,000-meter sprint. The Haggan Junior Boys and Mixed teams won the junior endurance races and also took first place in the 1,000-meter mixed sprint and 500-meter boys’ and 500-meter mixed sprints. Napu Outrigger Canoe Club Saipan won the junior girls’ endurance race. The event concluded with a celebration of the winners and the spirit and camaraderie of the competition. The next paddling event on the schedule is the “Timmy Would Go” in Saipan in January, with the 2018 Micronesia Cup taking place in Saipan in late October.
